MOONS’ signed contract in November, 2014 to officially participate in the grand project of FAST, the world’s largest Spherical Radio Telescope. MOONS’ will support this giant Telescope in its active reflector system through the outstanding performance of MOONS’ stepper motors & motor drives, providing all-weather assurance and reliable, accurate motion control underneath the 500 meter aperture active spherical reflector, which could realize to form a transient 300 meter parabolic dish under real time control.


Initiated in 1994, the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Telescope (FAST) is a key national scientific and technological infrastructure project in China. Standing in a region of typical Karst depressions in Guizhou province, the dish-like telescope will be as large as 30 football fields. FAST's main spherical reflector will be composed of thousands of panels and Its observation sensitivity will be 10 times more powerful than the 100m aperture steerable radio telescope in Germany along with its overall capacity to be 10 times larger than what is now the world's largest (300 m) Arecibo radio telescope developed by the United States, according to Nan Rendong, the chief scientist of the project and an NAO researcher. Such outdoor application in the particular mountainous area is a huge challenge to motor and motor drive products as they are susceptible to temperature extremes and moisture buildup leading to internal corrosion that quickly shortens product life, causing early motor and drive failures.
